Chester Zoo
This zoo plays a major role in the breeding and conservation of endangered species from around the world. The zoo houses thousands of animals so allow a full day for your visit. Highlights include the elephants, black rhino, monkeys and the twilight zone bat cave where you can walk amongst free flying bats (not recommended for those of a nervous disposition!). The latest addition is a butterfly house where you can walk amongst around 500 butterflies and even watch them emerging from pupae.
There is a monorail to give tired feet a rest as well as an unusual arial view of many of the animals. During the summer season you can also take a 15 minute boat trip along some of the zoo's waterways. The zoo has beautiful gardens along with cafes, a licensed restaurant and a bar. Don't let wet weather put you off - there are plenty of under cover attractions (just make sure you bring waterproofs for the walks from each one to the next). Special eventsThere are various special evening events throughout the year, for example the mother's day sunday lunch in March, sensory awareness days, a safari BBQ in June and bats by torchlight in November.
